Woodburning tips
These are a few tips that I have developed in my experience of woodburning... * Using a fine sandpaper to clean the (cool) tip removes carbon and residue leading to a cleaner line when burning. * Pine has a lot of sap which comes out as irritating fumes, smoke, and resin, but it's a nice hardwood that burns in clean lines. * Softer woods don't burn in clean lines and turn black easily, you have to use a hot, fast stroke and leave the tip to reheat when doing large projects to keep the lines clean. * Painting over burnt lines ruins the design. * Woodburning over paint can cause toxic fumes (depending on the paint) and ruin the tip. (I always woodburn first and then paint around the lines, it's more difficult but has a much better outcome!) * Compression board or wood with lots of grain burns differently in different spots, some lines will need to be gone over again in selective spots and a straight edge tip is best. * When doing complex designs, taking the pencil outline a piece at a time is a way to focus and not be overwhelmed by the whole project. * A good outline is essential to a successful outcome on ANY burning project. |
