The Lincolns of Hingham Mass
By Alicia Prater
This week on Qassia is about ancestry. The female members of my family have, for generations, been part of the Daughters of the American Revolution. We can trace our ancestry back to John Lincoln who fought in the American Revolution with a unit out of Connecticut. Even farther back, his ancestors came from England in the 1630s, helping found the town of Hingham in Massachusetts. There are several Lincoln families who came to and lived in the area of the Northeast United States at that time, and I spent years trying to untangle the Thomases and Samuels, Taunton and Hingham. We finally have a timeline and lineage we're confident is correct and traces my lineage back 16 generations. In the 1630s, three brothers named Lincoln came from Hingham, England to the new colonies - Thomas, Samuel, and Daniel. One of the brothers had no children; another is the patriarch of the line leading to President Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States; the third and oldest (Thomas) gave birth to my family. My great-great-grandmother was the last in my direct line to carry the name of Lincoln as we have become a matriarchal family. My grandmother grew up with stories of the family's ties to President Lincoln, taking great pride in the relation. We have come to find out in the last two decades that he is but a distant cousin, starting with the three brothers from Hingham. |
