The importance of networking for artists
For any pursuit, networking is a beneficial exercise. For business and professional interests, it is necessary. There are many ways in which a crafter or artisan can network. One way is through galleries, fairs, and shows. In the current age there are websites and online groups that facilitate such exchange. I myself have profiles on Talent Database, MySpace, Ning, Flickr, Squidoo, and Yahoo groups. I also blog in many places to talk about what I do. This is in both my crafting and in my work - science writing. I drop links where appropriate and add them into my profiles when possible. Talking about and showing off your craft is the first step to having a following. I recommend groups through sites such as Yahoo that correspond to what you do. The buyandsellcraftsnetwork is a new group that discusses networking for crafters and artisans. There are also groups that you can join on Flickr, Ning, MySpace, Facebook, LiveJournal and most blogging templates. Squidoo allows you to have a static page to display and promote and joining groups can add exposure. I actually started a handmade group on there. Any venue in which your work is present it is also important to become familiar with their community. There are usually forums where you can pick up tips pertaining to being seen on that venue or to promoting your work in general. When running into a snag with making a piece, communities can often lend a hand in sorting out what to do next. Also, you make friends, get new leads, and gain attention. An online search for blogs dealing with the venue may also yield tips and insight. Commenting on the blogs is also a good idea when appropriate. I have also been directed to a networking site called Ryze, in particular CraftyManiacs. I'm still observing that one as I am already present in so many other places. This raises a point...TIME! It is important to do what you can and not stress about the rest. For most places having a profile up and adding a new picture once a week is beneficial. For others it's good to check in once a day when possible. Set aside a day to read through new posts and respond or to comment on other's pics and profiles. And don't fret if a template is difficult for you. I have not joined Facebook and LiveJournal because I have trouble with them. MySpace is starting to get comfortable for me and I've been there over a year! Just breath and share your work - the networking will happen over time. The greater the web you build, and the more shared links between your site and others, the greater your presence and following will be.

Contributor's Note
Start out slow and build up over time...eventually there will be a web with you in the center.
