Interesting facts about the plague
Mention of the plague often brings to mind images of medieval Europe, but the disease is actually endemic (meaning it lives there in animals called reservoirs) to the Asia subcontinent as well as parts of Europe. The first occurrence, that we know about, of the infection known as plague is that medieval outbreak we all think of. It began in 1348 and killed a third to half of the European population by 1420! The term "Black Death" was coined by a German doctor in the title of his 1832 essay on the European plague. It had been used 9 years prior in an historical account of the illness - black meaning terrible or dreadful. The plague comes in more than one form! What we know is the Bubonic plague. It causes swollen lymph nodes called buboes to form. Other forms are the more lethal pneumonic plague that infects the airways and septicemic plague where the bacteria infects the blood. All forms of the plague are caused by a bacteria. It is called Yersinia pestis. It is transmitted by fleas from rodents to humans. The United States Centers for Disease Control classify the disease as rare. The plague was last seen in humans 1996, in India. It is treated with antibiotics and is only contagious to other people in the pneumonic form. It was last seen, to my knowledge, in 2007 in at least one dead squirrel in Denver, Colorado, United States! Proper hygiene can prevent most infections.
